Snippets of History: #ThisDayinHistory London’s iconic Big Ben, has chimed for the last time in four years for structural maintenance #AceHistoryDesk – @AceHistoryNews

#AceHistoryNews – Aug.21: The London landmark is one of the most recognizable symbols of the UK and thousands gathered today to watch as the tower’s bells rang out for one last time #AceHistoryDesk reports Notably, it will still sound to mark events such as Christmas Day and Remembrance Day. The Great Bell, the official name for Big Ben, traditionally rings every hour, with four quarter bells that chime every 15 minutes. But, this is not the first time the bells have fallen silent: they were stopped for maintenance in 2007, and between 1983 and 1985. The reason for this four year stoppage is that the iconic “bongs” would be too much of a danger to the hearing of the builders working on the Elizabeth Tower’s restoration. It will be the longest break since the bells of Big Ben were installed in 1859. #BigBen #London #AceHistoryNews
