#AceHistoryNews – Nov.01: Today’s Google Doodle celebrates George Boole, a Victorian mathematician who was born 200 years ago.
Unlike many Doodle subjects, most of whom have no connection to Google itself, the company owes a lot to the work of Boole, a largely self-taught shoemaker’s son whose discoveries paved the way for the search engines of today.
The words beneath the Google logo are Boolean Operators, simple words used to combine or exclude keywords in a search which lead to more accurate results.
‘AND’ tells a search engine to look for pages which include both words in the search. ‘OR’ tell it to look for either. ‘XOR’, or ‘exclusive or’ tells a search engine to look for one or the other, but not both.
