The book I read to research this post was The City Of York A Guidebook by Gill Matthews which is a very good book which I bought from a car boot sale. This book is only short at around 45 pages but is quite interesting and York is one of the great historical cities of the world. It is often said if the north of England was a country York would be the capital & it is the 2nd most important archdiocese in the Anglican church behind Canterbury. York was originally a fortress built by the Romans and quickly became one of the most important cities in Britain. Constantine who would become Emperor of the Roman Empire was long before that Emperor of York. When the Romans left Britain went into a period of chaos with various groups invading different parts of Britain and York became an important Viking settlement…
